Dentistry

Imagine how your teeth would feel if you never brushed them. Unfortunately, this is a sad reality for many pets – even those who have otherwise responsible owners.

Without adequate dental care, plaque, tartar and bacteria can build up, which can eventually lead to dental disease, a much more serious and sometimes even life-threatening medical condition. Yet, as dangerous as this sounds, studies have shown that the majority of adult dogs and cats suffer from some type of existing dental problem.

The good news is you can help your pet beat the odds and enjoy a lifetime of good oral health by committing to regular dental care, both professionally and at home, in between vet visits. We offer both preventative care and the treatment of existing oral health problems.

Our hospital features modern dental equipment which we use to gently and thoroughly clean your pet’s teeth, both above and below the gumline. This will remove existing build up and allow us to polish the teeth to a beautiful shine, preventing future buildup from occurring. Should the existence of infection or other oral health problems be detected during our annual exam and cleaning, we’ll develop an appropriate plan to combat the problem, including tooth extraction if needed.

Some of the more common signs that your pet may need dental care include:

  • Bad breath
  • Excessive drooling
  • Yellow or brown buildup (tartar) on the teeth
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums
  • Changes in eating or chewing habits
  • Pawing at the face
  • Loose or missing teeth
  • General change in mood (depression)

If you notice any of these signs, even if you regularly bring your pet in for dental care, give us a call to schedule an exam. The sooner we identify and address the problem, the better the chances of a positive outcome.

Finally, but equally as important, is the role that you play in your pet’s dental care. Annual cleanings aren’t enough to keep plaque and tartar at bay, so it’s important that you continue the work that we started and care for your pet’s teeth and gums in between vet visits. Our friendly, knowledgeable staff would be more than happy to show you demonstrations of home brushing techniques, as well as provide advice and recommendations on various food, treats and toys that you can use to support good oral health for your pet.

Together we’ll work hard to help your pet enjoy a healthy smile for life!
